SIR May Remove 4–5 Lakh ‘Suspected’ Voters from Assam Rolls: CM Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the proposed Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls could lead to the removal of four to five lakh “suspected” voters, allegedly illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. He said the exercise would not affect genuine Assamese voters and urged people not to worry. Sarma also claimed land purchase data in Upper Assam shows alleged Bangladesh nationals buying land in large numbers. Meanwhile, he distributed ₹10,000 each to over 17,000 women beneficiaries under the MMUA scheme in Digboi and said coverage would extend statewide by February end.
