Assam Records Highest Number of HIV Cases in Northeast

Assam has recorded the highest number of people living with HIV (PLHIV) among Northeast states, with 26,109 cases in 2024-25, according to data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
The number of PLHIV in the state has risen steadily from 11,364 in 2020-21 to over 26,000 in 2024-25. Other Northeast states, including Mizoram, Nagaland and Manipur, have also reported a rising trend in HIV cases.
The Centre continues to provide free Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) under the National AIDS & STD Control Programme. Health experts have stressed the need for stronger awareness and preventive measures to control the growing number of cases in the region.
