Assam Expands Medical Education Network, Says Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati: Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, speaking at the 4th convocation of Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences, said Assam has expanded its medical education network from three colleges in the early decades after Independence to 14 operational medical colleges, with nine more under construction. He said the state now has more than 2,000 MBBS seats, following the approval of Bongaigaon Medical College and inclusion of the ESIC Medical College in Guwahati.

Sarma also highlighted improvements in public healthcare, cancer treatment and medical infrastructure, including the planned ₹600-crore Proton Beam Therapy Centre at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. The convocation was attended by Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan and Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, where the Chief Minister urged newly qualified medical professionals to uphold compassion, ethics and responsibility in their service.
