Assam Struggles with Rising Power Demand, Focuses on Renewables
Assam’s growing electricity demand, up by 9% this year, forces the state to rely heavily on external power sources as local generation remains insufficient. Peak demand reached 2,879 MW in September, while the state generates only 320 MW.
To bridge the gap, Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd. (APDCL) has secured long-term and short-term power purchase agreements (PPAs). The government is also focusing on renewable energy, with 3,000 MW of solar projects in progress.
Power cuts during rainstorms are precautionary measures to prevent accidents and grid damage, not deliberate load-shedding.
