China Defends World’s Largest Dam Project on Brahmaputra Amid Concerns

China has justified its plan to build the world’s largest dam on the Brahmaputra River in Tibet, emphasizing safety and ecological measures. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning reassured that decades of studies have addressed environmental and safety risks.

The USD 137 billion project, approved on Wednesday, will be in a seismically active Himalayan region near the Indian border. China asserts the dam will not affect downstream water flow and pledges to cooperate with India and Bangladesh through existing mechanisms.

However, India and Bangladesh have raised concerns about potential flooding and water control. Engineering challenges and geopolitical risks also surround the project, drawing international scrutiny.
