Deepor Beel Faces Severe Pollution Threat Despite Mitigation Efforts
Deepor Beel, a 40.1 square kilometer ecological hotspot in the Brahmaputra valley, is facing severe pollution issues. The main source of pollution is the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) dumping grounds in Belortal, East Boragaon, with garbage flowing into Deepor Beel via the Pamohi River.
Efforts by the GMC to relocate the dumping grounds have not effectively addressed the problem. Pollution from the Bharalu, Bahini, and Basistha rivers further degrades water quality. Local residents and environmentalists are deeply concerned, recalling a time when the wetland thrived with diverse wildlife.
Urgent and concerted action is needed to protect Deepor Beel and preserve its ecological health for future generations.
