No Need to Panic Over HMPV Cases in India, Say Experts

Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) officials have reassured the public after seven human metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases were detected in India. GMCH Superintendent Dr. Abhijit Sarma emphasized that HMPV, identified in 2001, is not new and typically causes mild symptoms like fever, cough, and cold, resolving in 4-5 days. High-risk groups include children, seniors, and immunocompromised individuals.

Precautions such as wearing masks, hand hygiene, social distancing, and ensuring proper ventilation are advised. There is no specific treatment, with symptomatic management deemed sufficient. Experts highlight that reinfections are usually mild and not a cause for concern.
