Supreme Court Stays Eviction of Sonapur’s Kosutoli Residents
The Supreme Court issued a stay order on the proposed eviction and demolition in Sonapur’s Kosutoli on Monday. A bench led by Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan responded to a contempt petition filed by 48 residents challenging the government’s eviction drive. The state government must file its response within three weeks.
The petitioners argued that the eviction violated a prior Supreme Court order that halted evictions without notice. They claimed ancestral rights to the land and highlighted that they had valid documents like voter IDs and utility services.
