Protests in Dhaka Demand Minority Protection Post-Hasina
Hundreds protested in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on Saturday, seeking greater protection for Hindus and other minority groups facing violence since the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The unrest follows increased vulnerability among minorities after Hasina’s removal during an August student-led uprising.
The caretaker government, led by Muhammad Yunus, has condemned the violence but claims it is politically motivated, sparking anger among minority leaders. Protesters called for laws to protect minorities and ensure their representation in government.
Tensions escalated after sedition charges were filed against 19 individuals from a prior minority rights rally. Hindus, who make up about 8% of the population, are not alone in facing violence; Sufi shrines have also been targeted. Protests are set to continue as minority leaders advocate for their rights and safety.
