Women’s Reservation Bill Fails in Lok Sabha After Falling Short of Majority

The Lok Sabha rejected the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill after it failed to secure the required two-thirds majority, receiving 298 votes in favour and 230 against.
The Bill proposed expanding seats and implementing 33% reservation for women, linked to delimitation. Narendra Modi and Amit Shah supported it, while opposition parties opposed it over concerns of regional imbalance.
Following the setback, related delimitation proposals have been put on hold, delaying the implementation of women’s reservation.
