Assam Assembly Passes Bill Abolishing Cleric-Led Marriage System for Muslims

The Assam Assembly passed the Assam Repealing Bill, 2024, abolishing the Assam Moslem Marriages and Divorces Registration Act of 1935. The new law mandates government registration for all Muslim marriages and divorces, replacing the cleric-led “qazi” system. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the law’s role in eradicating child marriage, empowering women, and aligning with modern legal standards. The state will provide aid to displaced qazis and may appoint sub-registrars to ensure a smooth transition to the new system.
