Assam’s Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad seeks Scheduled Tribe status

On Saturday, the Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad, Assam (TAYPA) held a protest in Chachal in support of their demands. Their demands include the Tai Ahom being granted Scheduled Tribe (ST) status and an autonomous council before the upcoming Lok Sabha and Assam Legislative Assembly elections in 2024 and 2026, respectively. Along with these demands, TAYPA has asked for the declaration of Ahom Land for a more secure future for Assam.

In a statement, TAYPA president Bijoy Rajkonwar and general secretary Rudrasagar Buragohain said, “Still, there have been no results regarding our demands, even after our several protests. And if there is no progress, then we will not cast our votes for the forthcoming elections.”
