Meghalaya police officer hurt during HITO protest; 7 members detained

After police used tear gas and baton charges to disperse Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) members who were forced to march towards the State Secretariat on Monday, tension continued in Meghalaya.

According to a police official, Deputy Superintendent of Police Jeffry W. Sooting was struck by one of the stones thrown at the police at Kachari Point and suffered only minor injuries.

At least seven HITO members were detained on Monday after they threw rocks and bottles at the police and magistrates attempting to stop them from marching in the direction of the Secretariat.
