World Bank Approves $452 Million Program to Enhance Connectivity in Assam’s Rural Areas

The World Bank has given the nod to the $452 million Assam Resilient Rural Bridges Program, aiming to bolster connectivity for over 1.8 million people in rural areas, particularly during extreme weather conditions. The initiative focuses on enhancing the resilience and management of roads and bridges to provide year-round access to wholesale markets, schools, hospitals, and workplaces for residents in 1,739 villages.

The improved connectivity is expected to generate over $82 million in savings within six years, as it reduces travel costs. Assam, prone to climate events, faces challenges due to inadequate year-round connectivity, impacting the lives and livelihoods of smallholder farmers and tribal settlements.

The program also targets connecting women-led textile and handicraft producers and establishing electric vehicle and logistics hubs to boost regional market access while minimizing emissions. Auguste Tano Kouamé, the World Bank’s Country Director for India, highlighted the program’s potential to attract private investment, increase farmers’ incomes, and promote inclusive and diversified growth in the rural sector.
