Forest Worker Nurtures Orphaned Elephant Calves in Manas National Park
In Manas National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, forest worker Adhar Das dedicates his days to caring for four elephant calves separated from their mothers. These calves, brought from Biswanath Chariali, Bogamati in Baksa, Raimona National Park, and Chirang district, range in age from 15 days to nearly two years.
The youngest, named Lucky, survived being swept away by the floodwaters of the Aie River in Chirang district. Das has formed a unique bond with the calves, ensuring they receive regular feedings and daily baths. The calves have come to recognize and trust him.
Veterinary Doctor Prabhat Basumatary oversees their medical care. The forest department plans to nurture the calves until they are self-sufficient and can be released back into the wild.
