Rising HIV Cases in Dhubri Linked to Needle-Sharing
Dhubri district faces a public health crisis as over 300 HIV cases were reported in 2024, with 95% linked to needle-sharing among drug users. Dr. Mirdha Sanowar Hossain, District TB and AIDS Control Officer, revealed 30–40 new cases monthly, affecting students and young women.
Experts stress the need for education, community outreach, and targeted anti-drug campaigns. A 60-day awareness drive launched in August showed slight progress, but the district lacks a vital Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) centre. Plans for one at Dhubri Medical College are underway as efforts continue to curb the epidemic.
