FKJGP Opposes Chaparmukh-Jowai Railway Project Over Migration Fears

The Federation of Khasi Jaintia Garo People (FKJGP) opposes the proposed 180-km railway line from Chaparmukh Junction (Assam) to Jowai (Meghalaya), fearing an influx of outsiders. The group urged the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) to withhold the no-objection certificate (NOC) needed by Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) to proceed. FKJGP demands a migration-regulating mechanism, like the Inner Line Permit (ILP), before any project advances. While the railway aims to boost travel and trade, locals worry about cultural and demographic impacts. The project’s future remains uncertain amid ongoing debates.
