National Award-Winning Assamese Filmmaker Stirs Controversy with Upcoming Film ‘Ata Nirjon Duporiya’

Renowned Assamese filmmaker Khanjan Kishore Nath, a recipient of national awards, is generating both anticipation and controversy with his upcoming film ‘Ata Nirjon Duporiya’ (A Midday without a Name). Scheduled for release on March 1, 2024, the film has received an A certificate from the censor board due to its incorporation of intimate scenes and provocative dialogues.

Nath defends the artistic integrity of his work, emphasizing that these elements are integral components of the script, serving a crucial narrative purpose rather than being included for shock value. The film explores the complexities of societal norms and gender dynamics, focusing on a day-to-day incident involving a couple, Nayan and Aditi, facing challenges in finding a private space. The narrative delves into issues of societal judgment and the sadistic mindset towards women.

The filmmaker, based in Nagaon, stresses the responsibility of portraying reality on screen and the thin line between intimacy and vulgarity. The cast includes Kaushik Nath, Parvi Baruah, Dhanjay Debnath, Jitumoni Mahanta, and Bijay Sankar Saikia, with cinematography by Jaynath Sethu Mathavan and sound design by national award-winner Debajit Gayan.

Nath’s previous work, ‘The Bicycle’ (Chor), was selected for various film festivals, and he received the Asia Pacific Script Lab 2019 for his script, ‘Why the Blue Hill is Crying.’ In 2020, he won a national film award for ‘The Boy with a Gun.’
