Tension Rises Over Fresh Assam-Meghalaya Border Dispute

Fresh tension erupted along the Assam-Meghalaya border in Kamrup (Metro) district after miscreants from Meghalaya allegedly razed a house in Patorkuchi near Basistha and dismantled property. They erected a signboard claiming the area as “Maikhuli Village Property.”

Victim Hemanta Barma reported threats and police inaction despite informing local authorities. Nine families raised concerns with the Kamrup (Metro) Deputy Commissioner, fearing land encroachment despite having valid land documents.

Today, another group from Meghalaya replaced the signboard, escalating the dispute. Officials confirmed the incidents, emphasizing efforts to prevent escalation. Assam and Meghalaya had partially resolved border disputes in 2022, but this area remains contested.
